We are also now going to work on a 1SG list to add to the unit history section of the blog. The only 1SG I can recall from when I was with the 170th was Lynden Aitken. He was there in 1991 and / or 1992, can't say for sure.

I also got an email recently from a former 1SG of the unit that came across our blog. His name is John FitzGibbon and he was the 170th 1SG from June 2001 - April 2004. Obviously that is way after my time, so I did not know him. But he seemed like a good guy from the letter he sent me.

Go ahead and post the identity of your 1SG here, with dates if you remember them.

The best I can remember when I got to the 170th in 94 1SG Williams was in charge. Then in 95 1SG Phelan took over, Then in 97 or around there 1SG Dahl took over. After Fitz left. 1SG Stearns took over until 06.

when I arrived in 1988, there was no 1sgt. Acting 1SG was SFC Ford

I don't remember a 1SG either. I know that the Ops NCO kinda functioned as such, but had no authority. That was '87.

I can recall from 1985 - 1986 our 1SG was named Cobb (first name unknown). He was a PT loving, hard running, troop pusher. Nothing got by that guy.

I remember Sergeant Cobb. He came over form batallion. The 1SG I had was SFC Mobley I think was his name. He was a platoon sergeant and filled in as acting 1SG. 1SG Cobb did love his PT.

1SG Dahl is now the 42nd MP Brigade CSM here at Lewis.  He's deployed with the Brigade HQ, due back later this summer.

I had Phalen and Dahl for 1Sg and Brandsteter was BN CSM and then bumped to Brigade CSM. I know he retired and became dean of academics at Bates Tech there in Tacoma.

Freeman, I believe, was the 1SG before John Fitzgibbon.

Fitzgibbon was here at Lewis DES for a year or two as the Emergency Planner.  He took a job in the same field in Germany somewhere.  Phelan was so Bi-polar we called him "yo-yo."

Mr. Michael Brandsteter is now running for the Lakewood city coiuncil

His name was Cooper. I was stationed on the Presidio from late '81 to late '82. He was huge, a mountain of a man, but he could run forever. I just found this site. It would be great if more of my peers knew about it.
